The law of the European Union applies in Ireland and is constantly developing. A notable exception to this is the National Lottery, which must be operated in a way that generates money for good causes and small local lotteries which must have a primarily charitable purpose. Have fines, licence revocations or other sanctions been enforced in your jurisdiction? The National Lottery is operated by a single licence holder and there is a competitive bidding process when the licence expires. The applicant must then submit its licence application within 21 days of the issuance of the certificates of personal fitness. The engagement in a betting transaction with a person under the age of 18 years is also prohibited. It is unlikely this position will change in the short term.
